Hot-dipped Galvanizing Line 3
On 19 September 2006 the first pole for Hot-dipped Galvanizing Line 3 was drilled into the ground. The construction of this third hot-dipped galvanizing line of Corus in IJmuiden allows for the production of ‘Advanced High Strength Steels’ (AHSS). A product of increasing demand, especially from the automobile industry. Production will commence in September 2008
Products In order to produce safer and lighter cars the demand for advanced high strength steels is increasing. The current Corus galvanizing lines can only produce these steel types in a limited amount and in limited dimensions. The hot-dipped galvanizing line 3 (DVL3) will mainly focus on the production of these AHSS steel types and on steel for outer car parts.
Location Because of the great logistic advantages, the choice for the new line’s location fell on IJmuiden. DVL3 is being built in between Cold Strip 2 and the current galvanizing lines. This allows for direct supply of material and the possibility of joint transport of all products from all three galvanizing lines. A joint transport hall has been included in the plans. Unlike now, transport will take place by rail.
Design For the design of Hot-dipped Galvanizing Line 3 the expertise of the Segal hot-dipped galvanizing line (a Corus division) in Belgium was carefully studied. Their experience yielded many clues as to the features the new line had to possess. The line can produce a broad range: rolls of between 900 and 2050 millimetres width, between 0.6 and 2.5 millimetres thick, outer parts, inner parts, reshaping steels and AHSS.
Cold mill 22 The construction of the third hot-dipped galvanizing line is closely connected to the construction of cold mill 22. The two projects are more or less parallel and are coordinated by a joint project group. In 2008 both installations will be put into service.
